About Us

About Us

Society of Indian Missions

Society of Indian Missions (SIM) is a Christian organization that has been serving the Native American communities in the United States and Canada since 1951. Our mission is to evangelize, disciple, and mentor Native Americans in a life of scriptural holiness.

Our History

SIM was founded by Raymond Montour, who felt a call from God to establish mission churches and raise up Native workers. He started his ministry in South Dakota, where he conducted services in his home, held tent meetings, and visited community homes. He also began the Dakota Christian Hour broadcast, which was on air until 1993.

In the 1960s, Montour moved to New Mexico, where he initiated a work among the Pueblo and Navajo tribes. He also negotiated for land in the Rincon Marquez community, where SIM still has a chapel today. Meanwhile, other SIM workers continued to minister in South Dakota, opening works in Rosebud, Mission, and Parmelee. In the 1970s, SIM expanded its ministry to Canada, where it reached out to the Stoney, Cree, Chippewa, Athabaskan, Saulteaux, and Metis tribes. SIM also established a Bible school in Alberta to train Native leaders for ministry.

In the following decades, SIM continued to grow and develop its ministry across North America. SIM has been involved in various projects such as building churches, schools, and homes; providing food, clothing, and medical care; organizing camps, retreats, and conferences; supporting Native pastors and missionaries; and partnering with other organizations and churches.

Partnering with Building Hope Enterprise

Extending Our Mission Through Construction and Community

The Society of Indian Missions (SIM) is proud to support and own Building Hope Enterprise as an extension of our mission to serve and uplift Native communities. Through high-quality construction, discipleship, and cultural preservation, Building Hope Enterprise is making a tangible difference in the lives of families on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Together, we are not just building homes—we are building hope and transforming lives for generations to come.

What We Believe

Our Values

SIM is guided by the following core values:

Community

We value creating environments where individuals can provide mutual support and encouragement throughout their life journeys.

Cultural Sensitivity

We value the unique perspectives and traditions of Native American cultures and strive to approach our outreach initiatives with sensitivity and respect.

Compassion

We prioritize love for God and demonstrate this through our care for Native American neighbors and communities.

Partnership

We strive to connect with other ministries to create synergy.

Godliness

We prioritize scriptural holiness and aim to model this through our actions and teachings.

Outreach

We value outreach efforts that actively address the distinct needs of Native cultures and strive to establish meaningful relationships to guide this outreach.

Intentional Discipleship

We purpose that through biblical instruction and mentoring relationships, we will make disciples who obey Christ and disciple others.

Our Leadership

Who We Are

SIM is led by a board of directors that consists of men and women who are dedicated to ministry and service. Some of them are Native Americans themselves, or have served as missionaries among Native tribes for many years. They have diverse backgrounds and experiences in missions, pastoral ministry, evangelism, administration, education, and bi-vocational occupations. They provide steady leadership and forward-looking vision for SIM.
